The popular VyprVPN comes straight from the labs of Golden Frog located in Switzerland, a country that, as they say, reflects their company's mission and respects the rights of Internet users.
Their privacy-friendly location, along with some impressive features, powerful technologies and a passion for innovation makes VyprVPN one of the top VPN services in the recent years. However, this provider doesn't come without some concerns.
In other words, if you're looking to avoid geo-restrictions and censorship, VyprVPN is a great choice. But if you're looking for complete anonymity, you will end up thoroughly disappointed.
VyprVPN offers a truly impressive set of features that puts it shoulder to shoulder with the best VPN providers on the market right now.
First of all, you can always count on a fast and stable connection since the service provides over 700 servers and more than 200,000 IP addresses all across the globe. VyprVPN also employs dynamic server switching to prevent overloaded servers and connection issues. You can also manually choose and switch your server at any time.
On top of that, VyprVPN boasts being the only VPN provider that doesn't use third-party servers. They own, engineer and manage all their servers, unlike other companies, which promises full privacy and security.
When it comes to the security protocols, VyprVPN uses multiple technologies that you can choose from: PPTP, L2TP/IPsec, OpenVPN and Chameleon. While the first three protocols can often be found at good-quality VPN providers, Chameleon is a technology created by Golden Frog.
Chameleon uses the unmodified OpenVPN 256-bit protocol to prevent DPI (Deep Packet Inspection), VPN blocking and speed throttling. This means you can freely use the Internet without any restrictions even if you live in or travel to China, Russia, Turkey and other countries where VPN and certain websites and apps are completely banned. Unfortunately, Chameleon is only available to the premium users.
Privacy is where VyprVPN somewhat lacks, which is an unfortunate downside for a VPN service.
For example, VyprVPN keeps some logs for 30 days from each time a user connects to the service. One of the things they keep is your source IP address, which basically means that you could be tracked down if necessary, for legal or other reasons. Of course, they also promise that they would never sell or share any of that information with a third party.
Moreover, Golden Frog has a very strict policy when it comes to copyrighted and illegal content. While they allow torrenting, they are warning the users who repeatedly share and download illegal content and threatening with account termination. Privacy-wise, this is another quite questionable detail.
Performance is one of VyprVPN's strongest suits. They promise unlimited bandwidth, no speed throttling and no download caps. Besides, you can choose among 700+ servers
and switch between them for the optimal speed and performance without additional costs.
However, when we performed the speed tests, we weren't as impressed as we expected to be. Testing from our 1 Gbps line, we only managed to reach 64.3 Mbps once we connected to VyprVPN. But, we didn't detect any DNS leaks during our testing.
Not to be too strict with VyprVPN, this service still provides solid performance which will ensure a seamless streaming and gaming experience and pretty good download speeds.
VyprVPN can be used almost on any device and operating system, and it's equally easy to use on all these platforms. We loved the old-school but intuitive interface which is very simple to navigate and beginner-friendly but also features some advanced options for the experienced users.
When it comes to the customer support, VyprVPN promises to be there for their users 24/7, 365 days a year, which is only relatively true.
Although their website has a live chat option, when we tried contacting their agents, the support offered some pre-designed answers, none of the agents were available for the chat and we were asked to wait or send an email instead. Not very helpful when you need a quick answer.
Right now, VyprVPN offers two pricing plans. The standard plan comes at $5.00 a month billed annually or $9.95 billed monthly. The premium package comes at $6.67 billed annually and $12.95 billed monthly.
With the standard package you'll only be able to connect three devices on the same account, whereas the premium package allows you to connect five devices and gives you access to Chameleon protocol and VyprVPN cloud.
Golden Frog gives you a chance to take their VPN service for a test ride with a 3-day free trial. However, after you've become a member, you can forget about getting your money back. They are very strict about not giving a refund under any circumstances.
- Powerful security protocols
- 700+ servers
- Unlimited bandwidth
- Simple and user-friendly interface
- 3-day free trial
- No refunds
- Slow customer service
We can definitely understand why VyprVPN has its fans. A vast choice of servers, intuitive platform design and powerful security protocols make this Golden Frog's invention a solid choice for a VPN if you're looking to avoid Internet censorship and geo-restrictions.
However, the logging policy is a reason for concern. Unlike most other big VPN providers which promise their users a strict no-logs policy, VyprVPN logs some users' information which automatically kills the anonymity we all expect from our VPN.
